Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society City Landmark Nomination
Location: San Francisco, California
Client: Law Office of Stephen Williams
Date Completed: 2024
The Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society is a retirement home (known today as The Heritage) located in San Francisco’s Marina District. Designed by famed architect Julia Morgan in the Jacobethan style and built in 1925, the three-story brick residential building is bounded on three sides by well-tended grounds. The Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society is San Francisco’s second-oldest charitable organization and the first established by and for women. It was founded to care for homeless young women and their children, providing housing, childcare, and job placement. In the 1950s, the organization shifted its focus, transitioning into a high-end retirement home for both men and women.
In 2023, the Law Office of Stephen Williams hired VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consulting to prepare a local landmark nomination for the property in recognition of its historical and architectural significance.
The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission approved the landmark nomination and the property was designated San Francisco Landmark No. 320 in December 2024.
