City of Sausalito On-call Preservation Services

Location: Sausalito, California
Client: City of Sausalito
Date Completed: Ongoing

Sausalito hardly needs an introduction. This community of a little over seven thousand people clings to the southeastern corner of the Marin Peninsula at the north end of the Golden Gate. Possessing stunning natural beauty, Sausalito also has a varied stock of historic residential, commercial, civic, and industrial architecture within its 2.2 square miles. Downtown contains a densely woven collection of commercial buildings, hotels, and parks. Meanwhile, The Hill is home to several expansive estates, and Old Town, New Town, and Spring Street Valley are all traditionally working-class enclaves containing modest cottages and commercial structures.

VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consulting has consulted with the Sausalito Community Development Department on well over a dozen projects since 2011. Completed projects include the Marinship Historic Context Statement and Survey (2011), a National Register nomination for the Marinship Machine Shop (2016), a historic resource evaluation (HRE) for the Sausalito Shipyard (2018), as well as the Sausalito Citywide Historic Context Statement (adopted 2023).

VerPlanck has also completed historic resource evaluations HREs for approximately a dozen individual properties in the city.
