Stanford University is not in the Ivy League, but its low acceptance rates and intellectual achievements put it within a similar rarefied category of elite U.S. universities. Since its founding in 1885, Stanford University has evolved into one of the most expansive and beautiful educational campuses in the U.S., with buildings from several different eras of construction.

In addition to the core campus complex designed by Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge, the university possesses several residential areas, including San Juan Hill, a historic neighborhood of large homes built by Stanford professors and administrators from the late nineteenth century until the middle of the twentieth century.

In 2023, Stanford University’s planning office hired VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consulting to research and document four residential properties on San Juan Hill, including two English Period Revival homes build in the 1920s, and two Craftsman dwellings dating to the World War I era, as part of its long-range planning work. VerPlanck completed detailed research and fieldwork to document the four houses and prepared historic resource evaluations (HREs) for each one in late 2023.
