VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consulting is founder/owner Chris VerPlanck's first solo venture. Between 2007 and 2009, he was a partner in Kelley & VerPlanck Historical Resources Consulting, and from 2009 to 2011 in Knapp & VerPlanck Preservation Architects. From 1999 until 2007, VerPlanck led the Cultural Resources Studio at Page & Turnbull, and from 1997 until 1999, he was the preservation fellow at San Francisco Heritage.

VerPlanck holds an M.Arch.H. and a Certificate in Historic Preservation from University of Virginia's Graduate School of Architecture. While at UVA, he interned as a conservation fellow at Monticello, where he personally restored the mahogany windows in Thomas Jefferson’s bedchamber. After graduating from UVA, the Society of Architectural Historians awarded VerPlanck its prestigious Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship, which allowed him to work with the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) in Washington, D.C.

Mr. VerPlanck's primary areas of expertise include anything San Francisco, rural western cultural landscapes, postwar suburban development, Midcentury modern architecture, and monumental civic architecture from the City Beautiful era. He has lectured widely on these and other topics at professional conferences, including the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), the California Preservation Foundation (CPF), and Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement (Docomomo).

VerPlanck is an ex-officio board member of the Northern California chapter of Docomomo and San Francisco Heritage. His work is also published in several books and professional journals. VerPlanck has won several awards for his work, including from San Francisco Beautiful, the California Preservation Foundation, and the American Institute of Architects – Northern California Chapter.
